Crawl space insulation is a type of insulation in which insulation material is applied to the floor of the crawl space beneath your home. What does crawl space insulation cost?

On average, you can expect costs to range between €30 and €60 per square metre, including installation and VAT. The final price depends largely on the insulation thickness required. 

The larger the crawl space, the more insulation material is needed, increasing the overall cost. Crawl spaces that are difficult to access or contain many obstacles may also require additional labour. In many cases, grants are available for energy-saving measures such as crawl space insulation, helping to reduce the overall investment. The amount available varies by municipality and may amount to several hundred euros depending on your circumstances.

What materials are used for crawl space insulation?

At Pluimers Insulation, we use graphite-enhanced EPS insulation beads for crawl space insulation. These beads are manufactured from expanded polystyrene (EPS) with added graphite particles that significantly improve their thermal performance compared to standard white EPS beads. The graphite reflects radiant heat more effectively, resulting in a higher insulation value and improved energy efficiency.

Although graphite EPS beads are made from polystyrene, they are highly durable and designed to last for many years without losing their insulating properties. They are also recyclable. Because the beads completely fill the crawl space floor, they create a seamless insulation layer that helps minimise heat loss while reducing moisture problems. 

Crawl space insulation or floor insulation?

Crawl space insulation and floor insulation are both effective ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home, but each has its own advantages.

• Crawl space insulation: This is generally the less invasive option because the insulation is installed on the floor of the crawl space rather than directly beneath the floor structure. This means there is no disruption inside your living areas during installation. Crawl space insulation also helps reduce moisture problems, including rising damp and mould, by creating a barrier between the damp ground and the rest of the crawl space. If your crawl space is too shallow for floor insulation, crawl space insulation is often the ideal solution.
• Floor insulation: Floor insulation provides less protection against moisture rising from the ground because it insulates the underside of the floor rather than the crawl space itself. It can also be more expensive, particularly in older properties with difficult access or underfloor heating systems. In these situations, crawl space insulation is often the more practical option.

Older homes often have crawl spaces that are difficult to access, making floor insulation difficult or even impossible to install. Crawl space insulation provides an excellent alternative while generally taking less time to install.
