What is bio-based insulation?

Bio-based insulation is made from natural, renewable materials derived from living resources. Not only is it a more sustainable choice, but it can also contribute to a healthier indoor environment. In addition to its environmental benefits, many bio-based insulation materials also offer excellent thermal performance.

The power of bio-based insulation

Bio-based insulation materials, such as grass, straw and flax, represent the next step in sustainable construction. These materials are sourced from renewable natural resources and provide an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional insulation products. While we at Pluimers firmly believe in the proven performance and durability of traditional insulation materials, we also recognise the growing demand for sustainable solutions. That is why bio-based insulation forms an important part of the range of insulation solutions we offer.

Benefits of traditional and bio-based insulation

In our view, both types of insulation have their own strengths. Traditional insulation is valued for its proven performance and long-term reliability, while bio-based insulation stands out for its sustainability and lower environmental impact. Together with manufacturers, we continue to work towards developing more bio-based alternatives to conventional insulation products and improving their Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) performance.

At the same time, we believe our customers should have the freedom to choose. This allows you to select the insulation material that best suits your property, budget and sustainability goals.

Is the installation process different for bio-based insulation?

The installation process for bio-based insulation is very similar to that of traditional insulation. The main difference is that installing bio-based insulation generally takes slightly longer than applying spray foam insulation.

Some bio-based insulation materials can also be installed using a blown insulation method. This depends on the type of material you choose, and we explain more about this further down the page.

What does bio-based insulation cost?

The cost of insulating your home with bio-based materials depends on several factors. Before any work begins, one of our specialists will visit your property for a free, no-obligation consultation. This allows us to assess your home and provide a clear and accurate quotation.

Sustainable insulation solutions: Gramitherm and Greenfloc Cellulose

At Pluimers Insulation, we are committed to offering bio-based insulation materials that combine environmental responsibility with outstanding performance. In addition to Gramitherm, which is manufactured from natural grass fibres, we also install Greenfloc Cellulose, an innovative insulation material made from recycled paper. Both products represent the next generation of sustainable insulation and offer unique benefits for your home. Below, we explain each material in more detail.

Gramitherm

A great example of a bio-based insulation material is Gramitherm. It is manufactured using a process that transforms natural grass into flexible insulation panels with a high thermal storage capacity. What makes Gramitherm unique is not only its excellent thermal performance, but also its positive contribution to a more sustainable built environment.

Greenfloc Cellulose

Greenfloc Cellulose combines sustainability with practical advantages and attractive grant opportunities. This insulation material is produced from recycled cellulose fibres made from old newspapers. It is treated with mineral salts to provide protection against mould, pests and moisture, while also helping to regulate humidity. As a result, it contributes not only to a comfortable indoor climate but also to the long-term durability of the insulation.

Using a blown insulation technique, Greenfloc Cellulose is installed seamlessly, delivering excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. It is particularly well suited for roof insulation and loft floor insulation, where even complex roof structures can be insulated effectively.
