Practical example

Suppose you live in a semi-detached house with around 20 m² of glazing. You currently have old double glazing or even single glazing and decide to replace it with HR++ glass.

  • Current situation: double glazing with a U-value of 2.7 W/m²K.
  • New situation: HR++ glass with a U-value of 1.1 W/m²K.
  • Average gas consumption for heating: 1,900 m³ per year.
  • Gas price: €1.30 per m³.

With HR++ glass, you could save up to around 300 m³ of gas per year in this example. That amounts to:

300 m³ x €1.30 = €390 in energy savings per year

If you currently have single glazing, the potential savings are even greater: around 480 m³ of gas, equivalent to almost €625 per year.

Factors that affect your savings

Your actual savings depend on several factors:

  • Type of glazing being replaced: Replacing single glazing will result in greater savings than replacing old double glazing.
  • Size of the glazed area: The more windows you replace, the greater the potential savings.
  • Type of insulation glass: HR++ glass already provides excellent insulation, but HR+++ (triple glazing) offers even better thermal performance.
  • EPC of your home: The Energy Performance Coefficient (EPC) indicates how energy efficient your home is. The lower the EPC, the better.
  • Heating habits and ventilation: A well-insulated home delivers the greatest savings when heating and ventilation are also used efficiently.

Grants for insulation glass

Don’t forget that you may also be eligible for financial support through the ISDE grant scheme. If you replace your glazing and carry out a second insulation measure, you could receive hundreds of euros in grant funding. This can make the payback period even more attractive.

Insulation glass doesn’t just help reduce your energy bills; it can also improve your living comfort and increase the value of your home. Glazing typically needs replacing after around 30 years anyway, so when the time comes, it makes sense to choose an energy-efficient solution. Would you like to improve your home’s insulation?
